Simulation-based Security Analysis of a Reactive Ad hoc Routing Protocol under Black Hole Attacks

چکیده
Security in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) has received lots of research attention in recent years. With the proliferation of mobile devices and the inherent characteristics of MANETs as self-organized and self-configuring networks, a great need to address security concerns in these networks have arisen. Security in these networks could be looked at from various view points with respect to different layers through which their functionalities are attained. But since the communication between mobile devices in MANETs is achieved through routing, those routing protocols responsible for communications become primary targets for attacks. In the bid to provide secure solutions researchers have focused efforts in attempting to detect these attacks, propose secure routing protocols and investigate more deeply into the effects of these attacks. This work investigates the impact of these security attacks mainly the Black Hole Attack. With the analysis carried out we observed that in the on-demand routing protocol under study (i.e. AODV), the closer a Black Hole node is to the source of traffic, the greater the extent of damage inflicted on the network. Also this attack causes an 86% decrease in packet delivery fraction and an increase in packet drops by the same proportion. Keywords—Black Hole attack, Denial of Service, MANET, MANET Security, Simulation-based security analysis.

Mobile ad hoc networks are networks composed of wireless devices to create a network with the ability for self-organization. These networks are designed as a new generation of computer networks to satisfy some specific requirements and with features different from wired networks. These networks have no fixed communication infrastructure and for communication with other nodes the intermediate no...

By extending wireless networks and because of their different nature, some attacks appear in these networks which did not exist in wired networks. Security is a serious challenge for actual implementation in wireless networks. Due to lack of the fixed infrastructure and also because of security holes in routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks, these networks are not protected against attack...
متن کاملSecure Routing Protocol: Affection on MANETs Performance
In mobile ad hoc networks, the absence ofinfrastructure and the consequent absence of authorizationfacilities impede the usual practice of establishing a practicalcriterion to distinguishing nodes as trusted and distrusted.Since all nodes in the MANETs would be used as router inmulti-hop applications, secure routing protocols have vital rulein the security of the network. So evaluating the perf...

In recent years mobile networks have expanded dramatically, compared with other wireless networks. Routing protocols in these networks are designed with the assumption that there is no attacker node, so routing protocols are vulnerable to various attacks in these networks. In this paper, we review the network layer attacks and then we simulate the impact of black hole attack on ad hoc on demand...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Mesh based Multicast Reactive Routing Protocol under Black Hole Attack
A mobile ad-hoc network is an autonomous system of mobile nodes connected by wireless links in which nodes cooperate by forwarding packets for each other thereby enabling communication beyond direct wireless transmission range. The wireless and dynamic nature of ad-hoc networks makes them vulnerable to attacks especially in routing protocols. Providing security in mobile ad-hoc networks has bee...
